Migraines

Pain management is particularly important for migraine headache patients, and Johnston Pain Management offers treatment options designed to prevent and contain migraine headaches in some of the following ways:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers - Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve), might relieve acute foot pain. Take these medications only as directed by your doctor.

  • Narcotics - Drugs containing opioids, such as oxycodone or hydrocodone, may be used for a short time with close supervision by your doctor.

  • Antidepressants - Low doses of certain types of antidepressants — particularly tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline — have been shown to relieve some types of migraine headaches.

  • Botox Injections - Botox and other nerve blocking agents have proven to be effective in dealing with migraine headaches. If you have been diagnosed with migraine and get migraine headaches often, you may wonder if there's anything you can do to prevent them.

    • OnabotulinumtoxinA, or Botox, was approved in 2010 for adults who get chronic migraines. That means you have both:

      • A history of migraine headaches

      • Headaches (including tension-type) on most days (15 or more) of the month of which 8 are migraine
